1709, the town of Beaufort is the third oldest city in North Carolina and
was named after Henry Somerset, the Duke of Beaufort. The town was charted
in 1723, captured by the Spanish in 1745, pillaged by pirates in 1747, and
attacked by the British in 1782. Although it is primarily noted for its
fishing trade and resort appeal, Beaufort remains a charming place to live. |
